Ekaterina is an exploration of the themes of gender-representation, loneliness and romance. On the surface, the photographs seem to document the life of an average Ukrainian sex tourist, travelling the country in search of a wife. However, Swiss-artist Romain Mader‘s series, exhibited at the Tate as part of their “Performing for the Camera” series, is entirely fictional. Choosing to place himself in front of the camera, Mader constructs a narrative of himself as a hapless sex tourist, clumsily posing with mail-order brides and meeting numerous “Ekaterinas” until at last finding his bride. The photographs, and the accompanying short story, question the nature of photography and it’s relationship with reality, while also challenging our preconceptions of the Ukraine and of the sex industry as a whole.
